Chain Maintenance - Essential for Longer Life
One of the most important, yet most neglected parts of a motorcycle is the drive chain, because it is strong and trouble-free, many bike owners are not aware that proper maintenance is essential for longer life, maximum performance and safety. In action proper care of the drive chain can reduce sprocket wear and therefore increase sprocket life.
Replacing the drive Chain
There is a natural stretching of drive chain to wear. The amount of stretch of a non sealed chain should not exceed 2.5-3% of the original length. Sealed chains should not exceed 1%. Over these the chain must be replaced.
Tension Adjustment
A drive chain that is too tight speeds up wear by excessive pressure on the sprocket teeth, the chain joints and the gearbox main shaft. A chain that is too loose will wear quickly and may have a whip action that can cause it to snap. Normal sag is 0.75 inches. To check it press down on the top stand of the chain with your fingers. Tighten or loosen to achieve 3/4". In all cases you should consult the manufacturers hand book.
Sprocket Alignment
It is important to check sprockets for wear periodically. If wear occurs on one side of the teeth, it means there is misalignment, condition which will reduce chain life. Check sprocket alignment by visually sighting across them from the rear of the motorcycle.
Lubrication
Motorcycle drive chains are exposed to dust, dirt, grim and other corrosive elements which can reduce power transmission. Regular lubrications increases power transmission efficiency and put a layer of oil between the roller and bushing to absorb shock load.
Maintenance
External lubrication is recommended every 300 miles. Use paraffin oil for washing the chain, and never use steam, thinners or solvents. Where even one seal ring is missing or damaged the entire chain should be replaced.
When to Replace
Bruises, rust, stiffness and damaged o-rings may all cause a chain to break. When finding any of these, excessive elongation or abnormal noise in use, replace the chain and sprockets at the same time.
If battery acid is spilt on a chain replace the whole chain with a new one. Be sure to clean the chain when in contact with anti-frost materials like rock salt.
